In addition to a signature, date and sometimes location, which are often found on paintings, drawings, watercolors and fine art prints, it is not uncommon to find inscriptions on the verso. These inscriptions are sometimes written directly on the support or in other cases, on labels glued to the back.
Other items that may have artists handwritten texts are artists books, exhibition posters, letters, notes, diaries, photos.
Determining if the handwriting is by the artist can sometimes be sufficient to authenticate the artwork.
