Paper that does not contain synthetic fibers derived from petroleum can be carbon dated.
If you are not sure if it contains synthetic fibers a chemical analysis will be required first.
If it contains synthetic fibers it means the paper was manufacted after 1935.
The paper sample size must be about 10 to 20 milligrams for carbon dating. This is about the size of a standard postal stamp. The shape of the sample does not matter it can be a long thin strip.
